Your Bathroom Remodel Part 1: Why Remodel?

Welcome to the first post in our series about bathroom remodels.

In this post, we’re going to discuss something that you should definitely have clear in your mind before you make the decision to remodel your bathroom, and that is this: Why are you remodeling?

Most people consider a bathroom remodel for one of these three reasons:

  1. They want to improve the resale value of their home
  2. They want to update the look of the bathroom
  3. They want to improve the functionality of the bathroom

Determining which of these you’re trying to achieve can make a big difference in how you go about the remodeling process.

For example, if you’re remodeling your bathroom for resale value purposes, you’ll need to think about what might appeal to a potential buyer, and not necessarily about what appeals to your personal taste. Making your bathroom eye-catching to today’s home buyers might require a lot of changes or just a few, depending on its current state. To help figure that out, you may need to do some research, such as checking out home design magazines and websites, to determine the types of bathroom features that attract the most buyers in the current market.

On the other hand, if you’re just looking to update the look of your bathroom, you may choose to avoid making major changes, such as building or moving walls, and instead concentrate on aesthetic touches like new cabinets, countertops and fixtures. This approach can save you money, while providing a bathroom that looks fresh and new.

Even though it’s last on our list of reasons, remodeling a bathroom to improve functionality can often call for the biggest changes. It may not seem like a big deal to swap out a tub for a shower or to add more lighting to brighten up the room, but these kinds of changes can require opening up walls and rerouting plumbing and wiring, which can be both costly and time-consuming.

  1. I appreciate you helping me to understand that changing the aesthetics of your bathroom can help you save a lot of money during a remodeling project. My wife and I would like to remodel our guest bathroom since we are going to be having a lot of family members visiting us next month. We have a limited budget for the project, so it seems like figuring out what aesthetics we should change would be the best thing for us to do.
